News flash: it is a very rare occurrence for you to get paid for singing a tune in your favourite music video.
This was the case for Jadakiss, the band that made it onto the Top 10 of the Billboard charts this week, with their cover of the Beatles’ “All You Need Is Love”.
Jadakis cover of “All you need is love” (from the band Jadaks hit ‘Jadaks’) has gone viral on social media and has been viewed over 7.5 million times in just over a week, becoming the second best-selling song in the UK to date.
While it’s hard to argue that Jadakes song isn’t well-crafted and well-executed, the fact that it’s the biggest hit of the week and also the most popular one, makes this an anomaly.
So how did this happen?
It all started when Jadakess frontman, Liam Gallagher, tweeted about the hit, prompting many other musicians to jump on board and take a shot at it.
One of those musicians, and a regular guest on The Tonight Show, James Corden, who had previously covered “All we ever needed was love” at the MTV Video Music Awards in December, decided to take his song and put it in his own video.
He decided to use the song as the subject of his “The Late Late Show” interview on Tuesday night.
After he tweeted about Jadakis cover of his song, Jadakinys followers started flooding Twitter with requests for the band to release a new song, with many fans tweeting about it too.
One user, @lily_corden, asked Jadaking’s Liam what he thought of the cover.
Liam said, “Well, I was going to make an article about it, but I didn’t really know what to say.”
It didn’t take long for JADaks fans to take notice.
They decided to start tweeting at Liam and asked him for a copy of the track, but he replied with a reply saying he couldn’t give them one, even though he knew about the song.
“I was really angry,” said Jadaskis frontman Liam Gallagher.
“I said to him, ‘I don’t even know what this song is about, what’s the point?’
I thought, well, it’s not like you can do a cover of this.
I’m not even sure why you want to do this.”
Liam Gallagher is furious.
“When I saw this video, I thought it was just another dumb song.
I thought they were just doing it for the money.”
He tweeted back, “You know what I love?
I love the song ‘All you needed was Love’.”
This has sparked a lot of anger on Twitter, and the hashtag #AllYouNeedsToBeLiam has started trending in a big way.
The #AllyouneedsTobeLiam hashtag quickly became a Twitter hashtag for the song and it quickly spread across the internet.
However, the next morning, JADAKIS shared a tweet saying that the song was “unreleased” and “still in the can”, but it was too late to stop it.
“We have a contract with the band and they will have to release the track.
So it’s up to them,” said Liam Gallagher in a tweet.
“It’s a pretty dumb song.”
It’s been a rollercoaster ride for the fans and their Twitter followers, with the hashtag trending on Twitter in the U.K., and elsewhere.
However, it has also helped to boost the band’s social media presence.
“The #AllYOUNeedsYouTune and #TheLateLateShow interview have really helped spread the word about our cover,” said Gallagher.
“People are talking about it all the time, and it’s making people think about what a really great cover they could make for us,” said James Corde, who has covered Jadakaises song before.
“It’s like they are all saying, ‘Well, what about this, this is awesome’.
And I’m like, ‘It’s not awesome!
It’s like you said, you’re just doing this for the cash.'””
It has really, really made people want to take a look at it, and there are a lot more people doing it now.”
